Frequently asked Questions

Do I need a special licence to tow a trailer in the UK?

Most drivers who passed their driving test after 1 January 1997 can tow a trailer up to a combined vehicle and trailer weight of 3,500kg (subject to vehicle limits). Drivers who passed before this date may have additional towing entitlements.

We always recommend checking:

  • Your driving licence category

  • Your vehicle’s towing capacity

  • The trailer’s Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)

If you’re unsure, TrailerMax can advise you on a suitable trailer for your licence and vehicle.

What is the difference between a flatbed trailer and a car transporter?

A flatbed trailer is a versatile option for carrying a wide range of loads, including building materials and equipment.

A car transporter trailer is specifically designed for vehicles, featuring ramps, wheel stops, and weight distribution suitable for cars.

The major difference between them lies in how they are designed to bear loads. In a car transporter, the majority of the trailer bed’s strength is concentrated where the wheels of the car sit, whereas in a flatbed trailer, the strength is distributed evenly across the full width of the bed.

If you regularly transport vehicles, a dedicated car transporter is usually the safest and most efficient option. If you are wanting a trailer which can do carry anything, a flatbed would be for you.
